The importance of keeping your safety data sheet up-to-date
Regular updating of the SDS is extremely important because the changes in the characteristics of substances or mixtures or in their use may require changes or updates to the information provided in the safety data sheet. Despite this, it is the legal changes determining the content and format requirements of safety data sheets that typically make the updates and revisions necessary.
It is important that the revised safety data sheets may require a modification of the products’ labeling and also, the existing regulatory notifications (e.g., PCN) may also need to be updated.
When is it necessary to review or update the safety data sheet?
The continuous changes in the legal requirements concerning the content and format of safety data sheets, or the latest information acquired by the manufacturer/distributor (such as changes in composition, new toxicological data, REACH registration numbers, etc.), make necessary the continuous update of the safety data sheet.
The revision of SDS is necessary in the following cases
The revision or update of safety data sheets are not tied to a specific time period (there is no requirement for an annually/biannually/every five years revision of the data sheets).
Updating is necessary whenever a new information becomes available about the product and/or a regulatory change affects the safety data sheet of the product.
The update of the safety data sheet must be doen In the cases defined by Article 31(9) of REACH.

The update and revision of the safety data sheet can be based on an existing but outdated safety data sheet or a newer version of SDS issued by the manufacturer or supplier (even if it is in a different language than the one that needs to be updated).
The workflow of SDS revision
During the safety data sheet update process we perform the necessary content and formatting modifications based on the latest information provided and the actual relevant regulations.
When the latest foreign language supplier data sheet is available, not only new information is translated and included in the safety data sheet to update, but any possibly previous translation errors are also corrected.

- Formatting and content modifications to comply with Regulation (EU) 2020/878 and the destination country’s relevant national regulations.
- Classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP), or verification and, if necessary, correction of the existing classification if available.
- Verification and modification of the components’ IUPAC names and hazard classifications.
- Verification of workplace exposure limits values.
- Modification of content in accordance with legal changes.
- Replacement of general, contradictory, or poorly worded statements with professionally correct and stylistically appropriate sentences.
- Verification of transportation information (ADR class, UN number, etc.).
- Indication of the relevant current regulations during safety data sheet updates.

Notification of those hazardous mixtures through the PCN portal (cloud-based IUCLID) that fall under the scope of Annex VIII of the CLP Regulation, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2017/542 and its amendments. More information
If the product has already been notified before, we update the previous PCN notification, based on the updated safety data sheet, and, if necessary, we generate a new UFI code to identify the changed composition.
